Economic: District 90 is located in St. Tammany parish, and it includes major portions of Slidell and LaCombe. Situated on the north shore of Lake Ponchartrain, many residents commute to work in New Orleans and Metairie. Most of the residents are business or professional people. There are a large number of residents who remain in the district and are successful owners of several service, real estate, retail and medically related businesses. Two aerospace facilities, the Lockheed Martin NASA Michoud and the John Stennis NASA, both located just outside the lines of the district also employ many residents. Textron Marine and Land Systems provides high paying jobs to many of the district’s residents, as it recently signed a contract to lease the former federal Defense Informational Systems Agency on Gause Boulevard in Slidell for three years.
Hurricane Katrina caused significant structural damage from the winds and flood damage from the storm surge. The district quickly repaired the damage and restored the power, and it increased in population as many New Orleans residents moved here. Two years later, there are few remaining signs of Hurricane Katrina’s damage to this district.
Social: The majority of the residents in this district are extremely wealthy, and many of them have moved here from other states. They live affluent lifestyles and reside in exquisite country estates or in fancy neighborhoods that have been carved out of the piney woods. Several older, middle-class subdivisions, as well as a few pockets of poverty stricken areas, are sparsely dispersed throughout the district. The district is also home to a growing retiree population, as they leave the city of New Orleans for a quieter lifestyle.
Political: With over 80 percent of this wealthy population being conservative white registered voters, this district is overwhelmingly Republican. Voters here focus on state politics, and they are concerned with improving the state’s business environment and government reform.
