International Paper Wood Products maintains a local facility and Fiberbond, a manufacturer of concrete buildings, employs more than 500 employees. In addition, gambling boats in Shreveport-Bossier City has provided jobs and income.
One key element of the region’s economy is agricultural work and industry. Corn is the major row crop but forestry is the largest producer among all agricultural enterprises, generating $34 million in revenue in 2002 for the parish. The poultry industry is another burgeoning agricultural sector, providing $4.9 million to the area economy in 2002.
The impact of the 2005 Hurricanes, Katrina and Rita, on District 10 was seen most clearly in the level of volunteerism. Two ladies in the district set up a distribution center in a vacated Wal-Mart and the Wal-Mart Corporation paid for the utilities and supplies. All of the churches provided assistance and the City of Minden opened its recreation center for the housing of evacuees.
Social: This piney-woods district contains a typical north Louisiana mix of middle-class town dwellers, small farmers, blue-collar workers and a significant black population.
Political: District 10 tends to be working-class, though the AFL-CIO influence has diminished. While close to a quarter of the population, mostly in the Minden area, is extremely conservative, the nearly one-third black voting population has a moderating influence. The result is a split voting pattern and tight contests between Republicans and Democrats.

- Democrat and former Minden business education teacher, Jean Doerge, took office shortly after winning a special election in 1998 to fill the seat of her deceased husband Everett Doerge, a respected educator and community leader.
- As the Vice Chair of the House Retirement Committee, Doerge has become a major player on retirement issues in the Lower Chamber. She has rallied to the cause of retired teachers, providing cost-of-living adjustments and authorizing the purchase of credit on an actuarial basis for certain services performed while on contract. In 2009, she passed bills granting a minimum benefit increase to certain retirees, beneficiaries and survivors relative to the Teachers' Retirement System of Louisiana and the Louisiana State Employees' Retirement System. She’s also helped craft the modern Louisiana Assessors' Retirement Fund.
- Doerge also focuses on higher education. Louisiana Educators Association, Louisiana Federation of Teachers, Central Trades and Labor Council of Shreveport and Vicinity, Grandparents Against Drunk Driving and The Crime Fighters Association endorsed her campaign.
