Lake Charles suffered extensive damage from the wind and water associated with Hurricane Rita. The mayor issued a mandatory evacuation, and due to damage to the electrical grid, power was out in areas for at least three weeks.
Moss Bluff, a suburb north of Lake Charles, is the fastest growing area in the greater metropolitan area and is predicted to be the largest satellite in the near future. This area was hit hard by Hurricane Rita and many homes flooded for the first time.
Social: District 35 is predominantly white. Lake Charles including District 35 plays host to over 100 Festivals year-round. Over a third of the population is Catholic.
Political: The political registration in District 35 alone is over 50% Democratic with a sizable population listing no party affiliation. However, Republicans do well here in local, state and national elections.
