After a hard-fought battle to topple incumbent Republican Greg Fruge’ in 2003, Guillory sprinted back to the House during this most recent election cycle with no opposition at all.
Coming into his second term, expect Guillory to quickly gain more of a respected voice on criminal justice issues. He’s now one of only a handful of former law enforcement professionals serving in the lower chamber.

Rice farming is the dominate form of agriculture, along with crawfish. There has been some oil and gas activity in the district worthy of note, and a number of oilfield contractors are headquartered in district heart of Eunice, which likewise hosts some manufacturing.
Another major employer here is LSU-Eunice, a two-year college that attracts students from a wide area of south Louisiana. LSU-E continues to grow, thanks largely to a popular nursing program.
Social: The people of District 41 are largely Cajun and Catholic. There is, however, a significant German community in the Acadia portion of the district, particularly in Roberts Cove, which hosts an annual German festival. Excellent farmers, the Germans grow much of the seed rice that is used by farmers throughout Louisiana. African-American residents can be found primarily in Eunice and in the small villages across the district.
Political: The area is basically conservative and business-oriented, but not necessarily predictable. Both Kathleen Blanco and Bobby Jindal dominated the district during the most recent two gubernatorial elections. The district is also equally split on the gambling issue and gun control is an easy way to rile up the locals.

- Democrat Mickey J. Guillory is a retired Louisiana State Trooper and Eunice City Marshal. He knows the district fully as only an old beat cop could and thrives on constant contact with the community. It should come as no surprise that Guillory has taken a keen interest in criminal law in the Legislature, having pushed a bill in 2007 to increase the mandatory imprisonment for crimes involving the elderly or disabled.
- He is not a traditional pro-business lawmaker, however his vote in favor of LABI’s agenda averaged around 70 percent for his first term. He takes a firm stand against repealing tax breaks and credits, and would rather see programmatic cuts to the state’s budget.
- As for party affiliation, Guillory, who is a Democrat, has shown an enthusiastic willingness to work with both sides of the aisle. He is optimistic and looks forward to working with the new administration. Look for Guillory to work for not only his district, but the districts surrounding him as well. Guillory plans to get funding for state highways in this district that need resurfacing. Education, agriculture and transportation are also at the top of his agenda.
- When not in Baton Rouge, Guillory, an avid outdoorsman, breeds and shows quarter-horses from his Eunice farm.
