While LaBruzzo was unopposed during this most recent election cycle, he easily defeated trial lawyer Mickey Landry in 2003. The two were vying to replace Jennifer Sneed, who ran successfully at the time for her seat on the Jefferson Parish Council. Both LaBruzzo and Landry were first-time candidates.
On the horizon, expect LaBruzzo to pursue more of a role in the House Republican Caucus. He will also be heavily involved with redistricting over the next term, as Hurricane Katrina has caused a slow out-migration from his district.

Registered Voters by Parish: Jefferson 100.0%
Municipalities/Communities Represented: Metairie
Economic: District 81 includes a section of Metairie near of the storied 17th Street Canal, which Hurricane Katrina turned into a channel for floodwaters. Recovery has been slow but steady.
It consists of mostly residential neighborhoods, including Bucktown and Old Metairie of Jefferson Parish. Young people moving out of the city to raise their families developed the neighborhoods after World War II. Today, many young professionals purchase and remodel homes in the district in lieu of living in Uptown New Orleans, where property values are higher and crime is perceived as a problem.
There is little business or industry within the district, except for retail corridors along Metairie Road and Causeway Boulevard, where Lakeside Shopping Center is located. A few high-rise office buildings also are located along Veterans Memorial Boulevard and Causeway.
Social: Many residents are upper income, especially in the Old Metairie neighborhoods near the Metairie Country Club and enclaves farther out on Metairie Road. There are pockets of older, blue-collar residents in Bucktown. The remainder of residents are solidly middle class. Overall, this district may have one of the highest concentrations of whites in the House.
Political: The district is arguably the most conservative in the state, with a large number of Republicans. In fact, Republican registration makes up half of the district’s voters and many others vote conservative. Voters, especially in the Old Metairie neighborhoods, are well educated and very knowledgeable about political and business issues. Tax issues tend to be of foremost concern in the district.

- John LaBruzzo, a small business owner, is always quick with a joke but takes legislating very seriously. He is a conservative, pro-business vote in the House, siding with LABI a large majority of the time. Young and aggressive, this business-minded approach has granted him entry into the inner circle of the House Republican Caucus. He also has a close working relationship with the Jefferson Chamber of Commerce.
- He has campaigned in the district on two particular promises: To help businesses in the state and to pass a tax credit for parents of private school students.
- Labruzzo will continue pushing for more transparency on the state and parish level. He’s particularly interested in legislation that would ban public officials from receiving retirement benefits if they’re convicted of a public corruption crime.
